Basketball teams prep for postseason action
Local basketball teams will begin their postseason journey this week, with region tournaments opening up.
In 6A, the Neshoba Central girls finished second in the region and earned a first-round bye. The Lady Rockets will open on Thursday at 7 PM against the winner of Tuesday’s Vicksburg-Warren Central matchup.
The Neshoba Central boys earned the three-seed in the Region 2-6A tournament and opened up on Tuesday night against Warren Central.
The entire Region 2-6A tournament will take place at Neshoba Central on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
In 4A, the Choctaw Central girls won the regular season region title and will have a first-round bye. The Lady Warriors will play the winner of Tuesday’s West Lauderdale-Leake Central game on Thursday at 4 PM.
The Choctaw Central boys are the three seed in the region tournament and will play two-seeded Newton County on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
The Region 4-4A tournament will be at Leake Central on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
In 2A, both Philadelphia and Union will compete in the Region 4-2A tournament at Sebastopol on Monday, Thursday, and Friday.
The Philadelphia girls will play J.Z. George in the first semifinal matchup on Thursday at 4 PM, while Union will play Sebastopol at 7 PM on Thursday in the second semifinal.
On the boys side, Union saw their season come to an end in a 38-28 loss to Sebastopol in the play-in game. Philadelphia will now take on Sebastopol on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
In MAIS 5A, the Leake Academy girls and boys both finished second in their district tournament and will now compete in the North Regional tournament.
The Leake Academy girls will open on Wednesday at 4 PM against Starkville Academy, while the Leake Academy boys will play Magnolia Heights on Wednesday at 5:15 PM.
The 5A North Regional tournament will be played at East Rankin Academy, with games taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
