The Ku Klux Klan burned 12 crosses in Neshoba County in April 1964. The following is an excerpt from Jack Tannehill's column "You Name It" that appeared on page 1 of The Neshoba Democrat on April 9, 1964:
We deplore the burning of the crosses in this county last Saturday night, and can only hope that some day the guilty persons will be found and get the judge’s book thrown at them. All races here enjoy the very best of relationship and many of us count many of our Negro citizens as true and loyal friends. We hope our status quo remains, and feel that others do too, regardless of race. Outsiders who come in here and try to provoke and stir up trouble should be dealt with in a manner they won’t forget.
