Work has begun on the new metal roof for the Booker T. Washington gym renovation project.

The Philadelphia Mayor and Board of Aldermen received an update on the project during their May 3 meeting last Tuesday

Paul Mitchell of Waggoner Engineering said the new metal roof has been delivered.

“They are going to start tearing out the old gym roof Monday,” Mitchell said. “They have also finished cleaning the outside brick. It was painted black and yellow and now it is it is school house red.”

Mitchell said with the exception of removing paint on the lockers, no work would be done inside until the new roof is completed. He said the outside new doors have been hung.

Mitchell presented a pay request of $74,000 to Perry Construction for work that has been done. The board approved the request.

In other action, aldermen voted to:

• Approve an order amending Allen Engineering’s contract for work at the Philadelphia Airport by $4,850. This is for a FFA required study to make sure minority-owned contractors have an opportunity to participate;

• Approve a resolution for Crowder Engineering to apply for an Emergency Road and Bridge Repair grant from the state. It would be used for work on the Weyerhaeuser bridge and a bridge on Blount Street;

• Approve the hiring of an employee for the Street Department. Aldermen also accepted a bid of $24,000 from G&O Supply Co. of Jackson to provide culverts to be used for street repairs;

• Approve a motion to accept the sealed bids for an old New Holland tractor in the Street Department that has been declared as surplus;

• Accepted the resignation of an employee from the police department. Aldermen also approved the hiring of Caleb Willis, Christopher Harrell and Cory Evans as patrolmen, and Angelina Smith as clerk/dispatcher. Aldermen also approved the promotion of Desmond Jones to lieutenant;

• Approve the hiring of Tyler Spears on the Fire Department. Aldermen accepted the resignation of two firefighters; and,

• Approve the payment of $26,500 Allen and Hoshall Engineering for work on the Philadelphia Utilities erosion repairs for the sewage lagoon dam.

Ward 1 Alderman Justin Clearman reported recent problems with garbage pickup on certain routes. The mayor said the city would contact the contractor, Waste Pro.
