Aldermen table fireworks ordinance vote for changes

Posted

A proposed fireworks ordinance was tabled last week after the city attorney recommended changes.

Board Attorney Robert Thomas recommended changes that are expected to be brought up at the next board meeting.

The fireworks discussion was very brief and all Thomas said was there was some language in the ordinance he wanted to iron out and he would have something to present at the next board meeting.

One of the issues was firefighters having to check firework stands.

In another matter, the mayor and board listened to a neighbor’s complaints about the condition of lot at 501 Valley View Drive.

Elizabeth Pharis brought pictures of the lot. She said the owner runs a cleaning service and brings home garbage and junk from job sites keeping it at the address for lengths of time. Mayor Young said a letter would be sent to the owner.

Aldermen also declined a request to rezone property at 705 Range Avenue from R-1 to C-4 after hearing objections.

In other matters, aldermen voted to:

• Approve the minutes of the previous meeting and the claims docket;

• Approve the payment of $17,397 to Columbus Fencing for security fencing at the airport;

• Approve the payment of $865 out of the Fire Rebate account to Sunbelt Fire as a partial payment for the new fire truck;

• Accept the resignation of Adam Talbert from the Cemetery Department. Aldermen then voted to hire Jeremy Hudsont;

• Accept the resignation of James Parker from the Streets Department; and,

• Refund $84 to Kim McLain, and $547 to Lonnie McLain from the Municipal Court, per Judge Amy Taylor.
