$312K goes to Burnside restrooms
Neshoba County has been awarded a $312,000 grant to construct restrooms at Burnside Park, Gov. Tate Reeves announced last week.
State Sen. Jenifer Branning applauded the announcement and the investment by the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission in a statement last Wednesday evening.
“I’m honored to serve the people of Senate District 18, along with Rep. Scott Bounds, to help our communities and state grow for the future.”
She added, “I was honored to join Gov. Tate Reeves as part of the announcement of Mississippi’s $110 million of investment for economic development, infrastructure enhancements and workforce training support.”
The Board of Supervisors received the grant in October after completing several initial reviews and requirements and formally accepted the notice to proceed during their Nov. 4 meeting.
The county, in cooperation with the East Central Planning and Development District, is now conducting additional environmental reviews. Once an engineer or architect is selected, the project will progress to the design and engineering phase.
The construction, however, presents unique challenges as it is located in a special flood hazard area. To comply with regulations, the restroom facility and its equipment must be elevated two feet above the base flood elevation. Additionally, all requirements will be met to protect the wastewater system from potential flood damage.
The $312,000 grant will cover the construction of the restrooms and related improvements, including utility placement, network connectivity, and wastewater system installation. New lighting and surveillance cameras will also be installed to provide security for the facility and park.
“We have seen increased use of Burnside Park since the Board of Supervisors invested in returning it to usable condition by clearing undergrowth and overgrowth, removing fallen trees and debris, and renovating the Burnside Auditorium,” said County Administrator Jeff Mayo.
Following the renovation, the park has become a popular venue for family reunions, various meetings, weddings, and other events.
Officials said the new restroom facility is expected to provide further outdoor recreation opportunities and redevelopment at Burnside Park. Supervisors also recently approved the use of the park for archery events and aim to host tournaments in the future.
“We are excited to move this project forward to further enhance the use of Burnside Park,” Mayo said.
