Three people have been arrested in connection with an attempted escape from the Neshoba County Jail early last week, the authorities said.

The escapee has been identified as John Tyler Coghlan, 28, 7453 Ebenezer Road, Carthage. He was arrested and charged with escape and disorderly conduct.

His alleged accomplices include his wife, Lauren Coghlan and a friend, Norman Dwight McKinney, according to Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark.

Lauren Coghlan, 21, 10900 Road 616, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Norman Dwight McKinney, 27, was arrested and charged with aiding in an escape from officers.

Mckinney, who was released from Sheriff’s Office custody on the afternoon of April 26 was arrested again two days later as an alleged accomplice in connection with a burglary of a jewelry store in the Valley View Shopping Center. (See story, page 1A.)

Clark said John Coghlan was initially arrested around 2 p.m. at the Neshoba County Jail on Monday, April 24.

Coghlan was visiting the jail related to another matter when deputies realized they had a warrant for his arrest issued by the Choctaw Police Department, Clark said.

Coghlan was able to escape before the booking process began. He managed to exit the building and get in a vehicle parked outside with his wife inside.

Clark said the two fled the Sheriff’s Office going down the hillside near the communications building and turned onto Chestnut Street heading east. Clark said an off-duty deputy who had stopped by the office saw the two leave and tracked them in a personal vehicle.

Deputies caught up with Lauren Coghlan at the Vowell’s on Main Street across from the Valley View Shopping Center.

Clark said she then led them to a house at the corner of Evergreen Avenue and East Myrtle Street where they found Tyler Coghlan hiding in the attic. They also encountered McKinney at this address.

Clark said he believed the Coghlans were living at the house. Clark said the escape incident lasted about 20 minutes overall.
