23-4 Rockets baseball takes on Lake Cormorant in playoffs

The Neshoba Central baseball will take on Lake Cormorant this weekend in the second round of the Class 5A state baseball playoffs.

The Rockets enter the playoffs with a 23-4 record. They drew a first round bye after winning the Region 3-5A championship. Lake Cormorant defeated Jackson Callaway in the first round and entered the second round with a 14-8 record.

Game 1 of the best two-out-of-three series will be played at Neshoba Central Friday, starting at 6 p.m. The second game will be played at Lake Cormorant. A third game, if necessary, will be played at Neshoba Central on Monday starting at 6 p.m.

The Rockets enter the playoffs on a roll as they closed out the season last week with a 12-3 win over West Point and a 4-0 win over West Lauderdale. They played an extra game with South Jones, winning 15-8.

“We have been playing well lately but we still have somethings to work on,” said Coach Jonathan Jones. “Our bats have come around in the last few weeks and we have hit consistently all season. We have some guys who can throw the ball well. We have had a few injured but we are always talking about the next man up.”

A seven-run third inning got the Rockets rolling as they took a win over West Point.

Neshoba Central scored one in the second, seven in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. West Point scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth,

Will Garner was the winning pitcher. He struck out five batters.

Demarkez Hunter hit two home runs and knocked in four RBIs. Reid Hall hit a home run and a single. He scored three runs. Jordan Davis hit a double, scored two runs and knocked in another run. Creed Fulton hit a double, scored a run and knocked in two more. Will Williams hit a double and knocked in two runs.

Rockets 4

West Lauderdale 0

The Rockets scored in the late innings to take the win over West Lauderdale.

Neshoba Central scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Jesse Hancock went the distance and was the winning pitcher.

Hall hit a double and a single and scored a run. West hit a double.

Rockets 15

South Jones 8

The Rockets came on strong in the fourth inning to take the win over South Jones.

The Rockets scored one in the third, eight in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. South Jones scored four in the first, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Griffis Sanders was the winning pitcher.

Hall hit a triple and two singles. He scored two runs and knocked in three more. West hit a home run and a single. He scored two runs and knocked in two more. Garrett Martin and Williams both hit a double. Jordan Davis hit a three singles, scored on run and knocked in three more,
