14-game win streak comes to an end for Rebels
The Leake Academy Rebels saw their 14-game winning streak come to an end last week at the hands of rival Simpson County Academy.
The Cougars remained unbeaten in district play as they won 6-5 on Tuesday, 7-3 on Thursday and 8-1 on Friday.
The Rebels fall to 14-4 on the season and will face Lamar this week in a crucial three-game series. Game 1 is set for Tuesday in Meridian while game 2 will be Thursday in Madden. The series will finish on Friday in Meridian.
Simpson 6, Leake 5
The Cougars took an early lead and held on to take a one-run win on Tuesday in the first game of the series.
Leake had eight hits, led by Easton Page who was 2-for-2 while Gage Warren was 2-for-4. Majure Chandler, Tanner Walsworth and Tyler Winstead each singled and drove in a run.
Caden Stovall started on the mound and pitched four complete innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four. Matthew Nowell pitched the final two innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
Simpson 7, Leake 3
The Rebels were unable to hold onto an early lead as Simpson pulled away and took a four-run lead.
Leake scored one in the first and led 1-0 after three innings. Simpson then scored two in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and led 4-1. Leake scored two runs win the bottom of the sixth but Simpson hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to take the win.
Leake had nine hits in the contes, led by Tyler Winstead who was 2-for-3. Caden Stovall singled and had two RBIS while Matthan Weaver and Matthew Nowell each singled and scored.
Will Garner started on the mound and pitched six innings and took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits. Easton Page pitched the seventh and gave up three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two.
Simpson 8, Leake 1
The Rebels fell behind 6-0 and only had four hits as the Cougars completed the three-game sweep on Friday.
Simpson scored two in the first inning on two-run home run and then added four in the third to go up 6-0. Each team scored a run in the fourth while Simpson added an insurance run in the sixth.
The Rebels had just four hits as Easton Page was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Jack Harkins and Majure Chandler each singled.
Harkins pitched all six innings for the Rebels and took the loss, giving up eight runs on 10 hits and a walk.
