BROOKS/The big decisions
Let's say you had the chance to become a vampire. With one magical bite you would gain immortality, superhuman strength and a life of glamorous intensity. Your friends who have undergone the transformation say the experience is incredible. They drink animal blood, not human blood, and say everything about their new existence provides them with fun, companionship and meaning.

GETTING THE MESSAGE/John 12: 20-26
The context in this passage is immediately following Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, and the crowds shouting Hosanna (Save!) to him as he entered Jerusalem. Jesus's immense popularity with the crowds will turn to disdain or contempt when he is arrested, (which he knows) so he gives lessons in this passage on what it means to truly be one of his disciples.

GETTING THE MESSAGE/John 11:1-44
In this chapter we have the account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. The chapter begins with the note that Lazarus is sick. He lived in Bethany, which is close to Jerusalem, but Jesus was on the other side of the Jordan River probably 30 miles or so away when he receives the message that Lazarus is sick from the sisters of Lazarus (Martha and Mary).

GETTING THE MESSAGE/John 10: 1-30
Jesus, in this chapter, uses the figure of the Good Shepherd to identify himself to his hearers. He is speaking to Jewish people who are very familiar with the Old Testament. God spoke through the prophets promising He would send a Shepherd to lead his people who would be a son of David. We see this in Isaiah 40 and Ezekiel 34. Psalm 23 gives a very vivid, comforting image of God shepherding his people.
