JUST AMONG FRIENDS
By RACHEL EVANS

Jamie Martin lived the life of the rich and famous in Texas last weekend and it didn't cost her a dime! Of her money, that is. First in Dallas, she shopped for Steve's on the Square at F.I.G.'s and the World Trade Center. "I worked hard," she told me, "but I had a lot of fun. Rode in my first taxi!" And then on to Houston for a visit with her fairy grandmother, Bibi Hilton. They girl shopped together on Bibi's black American Express card, and dined with Eric, Kathy and Caitlin Hilton. All grown up after her taxi ride, "My grandmother let me stay in her guest house on the grounds all by myself!" Jamie told me. As the magic weekend came to a close, Bibi gave Cinderella a special handmake necklace, a "knock-out" garnet ring surrounded by diamonds and a new laptop computer. The striking of the midnight hour had no significance in this story. Nothing turned into a pumpkin!

Plans made and laid and the scene was set for a typically beautiful late Saturday afternoon wedding on March 29, 2008 uniting Angelique Lehmann and Ray Waddell in marriage. Azaleas and orchids lined the bridal path through the grounds of the Audubon Nature Institute. As the song says, "One bride. One groom. Memories are made of that," and as the poet wrote, "The best laid plans of mice and men" - get changed, so to speak. Rainfall caused a little delay and then it was time. The seating of the parents, Mrs. Robert Lehmann and Mayor and Mrs. Rayburn Waddell was followed by the wedding party, which included the groom's sister, Temple Waddell. Then the bride on the arm of her father, Dr. Robert Lehmann.

But wait! "Me first!" A beautiful peacock strutting her stuff joined the processional and led the way to the altar, spreading her colorful array of feathers as a prelude to the ceremony, officiated by the bride's childhood priest, Father Douglas Tucker. What a memory!

The reception was held in the tearoom of Audubon Park. Pre-nuptial activities for family and friends included a seafood boil at the Grand Isle Cafe on Thursday, a bridesmaid luncheon at Ralph's in the Park and the rehearsal dinner at Galatoire's on Bourbon Street.

Angelique and Ray met as students at Ole Miss and came to love New Orleans while Angelique was attending law school at Tulane. Following a wedding trip to South Africa, they will be at home in Dallas.

A very special guest at the wedding was Vannessa Kaiser from Sao Paulo, Brazil who had made her home with the Waddell family for one year as an exchange student. She was accompanied by her sister, Karla Kaiser.

In reading the April 2008 issue of Southern Living magazine, be sure to check out page 30's Travel Small Town story entitled "Picture-Perfect Bluffton" by Jennifer V. Cole. For yes, that is our Jennifer Cole, the daughter of Sellers and Julia Cole. In a recent issue of Philly.Ms, I loved the exciting story of how Jennifer gave up a life and career she loved in New York City to return to the South as a travel editor with Southern Living. The magazine just got better with the "Philadelphia touch."

Prom night at the Baileys was especially special as Chip was home from active duty with the Army Special Forces to see his daughter, Elizabeth, all dressed up for her senior prom. Joined by her friends, Brant McNeese, Danielle Stafford, Micah Stewart, Garrett Moorehead, Emily Hague, Anna Powell and Alex Deason, Chip, Laura and Molly waved goodbye as the limo carried them away to Zach Garvin's in Newton for an early dinner. Back in Philadelphia, they joined their classmates at Philadelphia High School at the Philadelphia Country Club and danced the night away.

Molly and her sixth grade friends shared some of the evening's splendor. During the prom, the limo driver took Molly, Savannah VanLandingham, K K Bounds, Courtney Wells, Will Cole, Rissa Smith, Emma Killen, DeeDee Bose, McKinsey Goldman, Heather Hedgepeth and Luke Eldridge on a night cruise through the city.

Tiffany McMichael Bass, Breanna, Brandon and Mason Hartness, Leigh Babcock and Anthony Rodriguez were guests of Claude Peebles, Jr., Inez Hamilton Peebles, Patti Peebles, Susie-Hannah Williams and Bob and Claudette McMichael during spring break. This being Anthony's first visit to Philadelphia, Bob, Brea, Brandon and Leigh showed him all the highlights of our city, including the casino and the fairgrounds. Bob returned to his home in Walker, La. in time to spend the weekend with his grandchildren.

Breanna returned to Philadelphia to attend the Philadelphia High School Junior-Senior Prom with her cousin, Susie-Hannah, who is a junior at PHS. Claudette and Patti relived their own proms by helping the girls get ready for the big event.

Inez Hamilton Peebles enjoyed a visit on Saturday with her brother and sister-inp-law, Sidney E. and Vivian Hamilton, and their great-grandson, Sidney Trey Hamilton. On Sunday, her brother and sister-in-law from Clinton, Cliff and Janie Hamilton, surprised Inez with a visit. Cliff brought his sister a CD from an album a cousin, H. Wayne Stevens, now deceased, recorded over 30 years ago. Some of the songs were written by Mr. Stevens about his family.

There is some fun going on in our Fair city.

Last week I wrote about Miss Esther Watkins' sister, Mildred Watkins Wilson's 90th birthday. The following is an account of the celebration as provided us by Mildred's daughter, Carol Wilson Kramer.

The Wilson and Watkins families gathered in Louisville on the weekend of March 29 to celebrate the 90th birthday of Mildred Watkins Wilson. Friends and relatives came from California, Missouri, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and various part of Mississippi. On Saturday afternoon Mildred's house and yard were full of well wishers ranging in age from 2 to 92. Teenagers were throwing footballs, young children were playing, and the adults were eating and talking. Mildred has always been known for her hospitality, and it continues at age 90. In the evening a dinner was held at Lake Tiak -O'Khata. A slide presentation of Mildred was shown and several tributes to Mildred were given. A delicious meal of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and turnip greens was served, along with a cake made by Mildred's great niece, Shelley Goudy. Shelley transported the cake from Southaven, Mississippi to Louisville for the occasion.

The guest list included: Mildred's son, David Wilson; her daughter, Carol Wilson Kramer (Fred); grandchildren, John Kramer (Kim); Katie Kramer Jaroch and Kevin Kramer; sister, Esther Watkins; sister-in-law, Louise Watkins; nieces and nephews, Thaddeus Earl Watkins III, Jim Watkins (Susan), Elizabeth Watkins Saunders (Kevin), Esther Watkins Gulli (Chris), Martha Wilson Norman (Red), Eleanor Castle; great-nieces and nephews, Martha Watkins, Thad Watkins IV, Charles B. Watkins, Will Watkins, Sam Watkins, Andrew Saunders, David Saunders, Luke Saunders, Elizabeth Gulli, Grace Gulli, Ben Castle, Sandy Ray (Jim Patterson) S.T. Ray, Cherie Castle Long (Bill), Lee Castle (Kay), Shelley Goudy (Rob); great-great-nieces and nephews, Summer Ashmore (Jonathan), Michael Woods; great-great-great nieces and nephews: Kennedy Ashmore and Dylan Ashmore; cousins, Mary Ellen Watkins Prechter (Gary), Callie and Laurie Prechter, Homer and Sarah Watkins and Jimmie Daly.

Friends were Keith and Carol Winfield; Ann and Ashley Loiterstein; Cassandra Chancellor; Judy and Bob McLeod; Barbara Sturbaum; Pruitt and Marie Woodall; Mike and Bettye Forster; Leslie and Liselle Smyth; Carol Mitchell; Louise Tomlinson; Laurie Duett; Emma and Jo Wiley Duett; Mendall and Rita Kemp; Mike Evans; and Joe and Dorothy Patridge.
