The Philadelphia High School Tornadoes open their 2014 season at home against South Delta Friday in prep football action.

The Tornadoes dropped a 33-7 decision to Aberdeen this past Saturday in the jamboree at Mississippi State University. And it wasn't the loss that bothered Head Coach Teddy Dyess as was the mistakes that were of made.

"We were bad," Dyess said. "I guess what bothered me the most was that we had senior players with one or two years of experience making fundamental mistakes. We lined up wrong. We were in the wrong hole. We were not fundamentally sound."

Still, the Tornadoes are 0-0. Dyess said this would be an important week of practice.

"We can't worry about South Delta right now," Dyess said. "We have to fix what is wrong with Philadelphia. We watched the film. Right now, we are not fundamentally sound and I will take responsibility for that."

Philadelphia's only score of the game came on a pass play from quarterback Tecoy Bingham to Johnathan Edwards. John Harold Smith kicked the extra point.

The Tornadoes are coming off an 11-2 season in 2013 and defeated South Delta 49-0 in last year's game. South Delta plays in the Region 3-2A. The Bulldogs finished 6-6 last year.

"They didn't play a jamboree game this weekend so we haven't had a chance to see them," Dyess said. "Last year, they stayed on the ground and I expect that's what we will see this week."

Shutting down the Bulldog offense will be up to the Philadelphia defense. Kenshon Henderson and Brad Horne start at the defensive tackles while Dominic Eiland, Warlchez Spencer and William Smith will play at nose guard. The line backing corps is made up of Josh Rush, K.J. Peebles, Jaylen Davis, Kevin Smith, Justen Baxstrum and Javon Spencer.

Edrick McClendon, Kevin Smith and Michael Shoemaker will all see action at the cornerback positions while Kaylon Gray and Johnathan Edwards will play at safety.

"We have gone to jamborees and spring games and not played well in the past," Dyess said. "And we learned lessons from those experiences. Now we will see what we learn from this past weekend."
