Stovall's Sacrifice for Soldiers Remembrance this weekend

Over 100 runners are expected for a 5K on Saturday as part Stovall's Sacrifice for Soldiers Remembrance Weekend, which also includes a golf tournament and remembrance event on Friday.

The remembrance weekend was founded to carry on the legacy of First Lt. Matthew R. Stovall, who was killed during his service in Iraq. Stovall was a Neshoba County native and just 25 years old at the time of his death in 2004.

The golf tournament starts at 8 a.m. Friday at Philadelphia County Club and is followed by a remembrance event and tribute to the National Guard's 401st, 367th, and 298th units from 3 to 5 p.m. at Coldwater Cemetery. The weekend concludes on Saturday morning with the Steps for Stovall 5K starting at 8 a.m. at the National Guard armory.

All of the proceeds from the event will be used to sponsor a four-day "Weekend for Warriors" in Biloxi.

The proceeds will cover lodging, meals, travel and other expenses for four families of recently deployed soldiers. The families of Lisa Bacon, David Jenkins, Craig Chambers and Michael McCree were chosen earlier this week.

Natalie Stovall Frady said 100 people have already pre-registered for the 5K and 15 golf teams have signed up for the tournament, but those aren't final numbers.

"We have heard many people saying that they will register the day of the events.  We are hoping for a huge turn out!" she said.
