Grand jury to hear stabbing death case
By CASEY GREENE

A case involving the stabbing death of a woman last week will be heard by a grand jury later this year, the authorities said.

A domestic dispute apparently led to the stabbing death of a Philadelphia woman at a mobile home off county Road 545 about 10 a.m. Thursday, Sheriff's Investigator Kevin Baysinger confirmed.

Catherine Thomas, 49, was pronounced dead on the scene of the crime, he said.

A man was in custody for about five hours before being released without charges.

Authorities believe the incident occurred in self defense, Basinger said.

Authorities said Thomas entered the home arguing and the domestic dispute escalated from there.

Latoria Thomas said her mother was a person rarely caught without a smile on her face and a person always going out of her way for others.

"She would help anyone she could, no matter the situation," she said. "She never told nobody no. She was always a joyous person."

Latoria Thomas said her mother worked at Ability Works in Meridian, a program that helps prepare people for better jobs.

Catherine Thomas is survived by four children, Latoria Thomas, 32, Georgilina Hill, 19, Teraven Thomas, 17, and Techarleston Thomas, 17. She also is survived by three grandchildren, Candeshala Thomas, 10, Shanquetta Gully, 6, and Amari Tims, 11 months.

The Sheriff's Department, East Neshoba Volunteer Fire Department and Neshoba EMS responded to the call.
