Fair seeking design for 125th flag
By STEVEN THOMAS
Staff Reporter

Philadelphia artist Jane Kynerd is pondering the design she'll enter in the Neshoba County Fair's 125th anniversary flag contest due this winter.

The Fair Board is already gearing up for next year's big anniversary celebration that may also include a hand-cranked ice cream contest.

Kynerd is considering keeping parts of the current flag that will be retired.

"I was recently watching the Antiques Road Show on old hood ornaments and thought the [flag] design need to be simple," she said.

"I might hang on to some parts of it, she said, or maybe I'll just "jazz it up."

Andy King, a member of the celebration committee, said many new ideas are being considered for the big celebration in addition to the flag.

The Fair Association is asking for 57 by 32 inch flag entries that are colorful, festive and feature the Neshoba County Fair logo. The 125th Neshoba County Fair can also be incorporated.

The current flag, designed by Pam Posey Sharp, has a circle with a Fair cabin with three colors, red, blue and green.

"The colors were neat," Kynerd said. "The red dirt, blue sky and green grass."

Kynerd is supportive of the attempt by the Fair Board to draw more interest for the Fair.

"It's a wonderful idea that heightens interest and brings out the artists in town," she said. "It's good for the community and for the Fair."

Contestants can be of all ages.

Designs can be mailed to Neshoba County Fair 16800 Highway 21 south, Philadelphia, MS 39350, or dropped off at the Fair office.

They may also be dropped off at the Community Development Partnership office,

Designs are due by Feb. 1, 2014, and will be judged by the Fair Association.

The designer's name, address, city, state, address, zip code and phone number should be included with the submission.

The designs are the property of the Fair Association, King said.

For more information, call the Fair office at 601-656-8480 or email ncfa@bellsouth.net.

In addition to the contest, King and others are looking at a number of other events to commemorate the anniversary.

The Fair Association has considered bringing back old Fair events and starting new contests.

"We have considered a quilting and a hand-cranked ice cream contest," King said.

"We're even thinking of inviting all the past Miss Neshoba County Fair pageant winners back."

King also asked that cabin and camper owners put up "festive" decorations in honor of the event during the 2014 Fair.

Special musical entertainment is also being discussed.

Ideas for next year include an all Mississippi line-up or filling up each night with big named entertainers.

"The problem is we don't have that big a budget," King said.

Despite all these ideas King doesn't want to interrupt the normal Fair activities.

"We don't want it to be so busy that everyone can't see everything," he said.

During the 2013 Neshoba County Fair, the Board had two suggestion boxes up on the Fairgrounds.

"We had over 100 suggestions for next year's Fair," King said.

"Most of the suggestions centered on bringing in better musical entertainment."
