Philadelphia's sales tax collections saw about a 3 percent decrease or about $8,051 in January.

The city posted January collections of $257,302, compared to $265,353 for the same month in 2012.

Sales tax collections for July 1 to-date are up about $20,732.

Philadelphia's tourism tax for January totaled $6,004, compared to $6,177 for the same month in 2012. Tourism tax collections are up about $1,439 so far for the year or about 2.25 percent.

The city collects an additional 3 percent tax on hotel rooms. Those monies are used to promote tourism.

Sales tax collections make up more than half of the city's revenue stream, which funds such operations as police, fire and street departments, among others.
