Its baby blue tin dome roof removed, the new owners of the historic Benwalt Hotel downtown are seeking to have it put on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ratibu Jacocks, who owns the structure with his wife, Neshoba County native Amina Carter, said the designation is necessary in order to qualify for tax credits to aid in the restoration.

The California couple plans to reopen the hotel as the Philadelphia, Mississippi Rights Museum, which will have condominiums, a restaurant and museum. The hotel was built in 1928.
