Philadelphia aldermen meeting at 5 p.m. tonight to finalize proposed tax hike

Philadelphia aldermen are expected to approve a proposed tax hike that will double general fund millage along with grant pay raises to city employees in a meeting tonight at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

Pay raises totalling $49,546 are expected to be approved by the Philadelphia Mayor and Board of Aldermen under an overall proposed $7.6 million 2014 budget.

The tax increase is expected to generate about $565,000 and help balance the budget after six consecutive years of spending about $6 million more than has been take in.

The tax increase would mean an additional $100 on a $100,000 home.

A final hearing for public comment on the proposed budget and tax increase is expected to be set for Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m. in City Hall.
