Lady Rockets open with two wins
By STEVE SWOGETINSKYThe Neshoba Central Lady Rockets got their 2013 fast-pitch softball season off to a successful start Saturday with two victories in the East Webster Classic.
The Lady Rockets swept a pair of games from Vardaman, winning 10-0 and 9-2.
Choctaw Central and Philadelphia both went 1-1 at the Northeast Park Classic as both won one and then lost to Newton County. Union was rained out.
Here is how each of the local teams stood at the start of the week:

The Lady Rockets scored kept up a steady attack in their 10-0 win over Vardaman. They scored three in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Kayla McKinnon pitched a no-hitter. She walked one batter and struck out six.
The Lady Rockets pounded out 11 hits, led by Hailey Lunderman who hit a double and single.
Game two saw the Lady Rockets scored seven in the second and two in the sixth. Vardaman scored one in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Jeanna Pigg was the winning pitcher. She had four strike outs.
The Lady Rockets finished with 11 hits. Kaila Willis led with a triple and a double. Pigg helped her own cause with a double and two RBIs. Ali Pike hit a double and was credited with one RBI.
The Lady Tornadoes opened their campaign with a 10-3 win over Clarkdale.
Philadelphia scored one in the first, one in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth. Clarkdale scored three runs in the fourth.
Caitlyn Dickerson was the winning pitcher. She allowed three hits and struck out five.
Alyssa Davis went 4-for-4 at the plate with two triples. Dana Anderson went 3-for-3. Jada White hit a double.
The Lady Tornadoes dropped a 7-2 decision to Newton County. Davis hit a double and Latesha Carter added a single.
The Warriors opened their campaign with a 9-5 win over Meridian High School.
Choctaw Central scored five in the first, three in the second and one in the third. The Lady Wildcats answered with four in the first and one in the second.
Raina King was the winning pitcher. She recorded five strikeouts and allowed seven hits.
Ashley Thames hit a triple and a single while Precious Favre and Betty Mingo both added a double.
The Lady Warriors lost a 9-3 decision to Newton County. Camry Mingo hit a double while King and Kristen Josh both had a single.
