The Philadelphia Tornadoes overcame adversity of their own making Friday night as they defeated Leake Central 26-7 in prep football action at Harpole Field.

The Tornadoes will be back in action this Friday night when they visit Noxubee County in Macon. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Noxubee County comes in a 2-0 record following a 19-0 win over Columbus this past Friday night.

The Tornadoes were playing without six starters. Five were suspended for missing practice. Running back Deiondre Foxx was held out with an ankle injury.

“For all that went on, this was the soundest game we have played,” Coach David Frey said. “A lot of our younger kids got to play and made some big contributions. We’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the coming week.”

The Tornadoes only had two turnovers, an interception and a fumble, and both came late in fourth quarter.

“I thought the defense played well. We’ll have a tough opponent in Noxubee County this week,” Frey said.

Philadelphia took a 20-0 halftime lead.

The Tornadoes kicked off and forced Leake Central to punt on fourth down. Philadelphia drove down to the one-yard line where quarterback Asher Morgan took it in. The kick failed and Philadelphia led 6-0 with 6:30 left in the first quarter.

The Gators took the kickoff and got a drive going that was ended when Breon Jordan intercepted a pass, giving Philadelphia possession on the Tornado 26-yard line. That resulted in a 15-play drive that ended when Morgan connected with Janylan Dupree on a 17-yard TD pass play. The try for two failed and the Tornadoes led 12-0 with 10:11 left in the second quarter.

Philadelphia put together a 14-plaay drive that covered 63 yards and took up most of the second quarter. This time, Radarius Triplett scored on a two-yard run. Morgan scored the two point conversion and the Tornadoes led 20-0 at the half.

The Tornadoes’ final score of the night came in the third quarter when Morgan connected with Kadarius Calloway on a 26-yard touchdown pass play. The extra point try failed and the Tornadoes led 26-0 with 7:12 left in the third quarter.

Leake Central scored on a 25-yard TD pass with 10:32 left in the game to end the scoring.

Morgan completed 26-of-35 passing attempts for 215 yards. He was intercepted once. Jordan had five catches for 80 yards while Dupree had six catches for 64 yards. Triplett was the leading rusher with 39 yards.

“We didn’t run the ball that much,” Frey said. “We usually run more but this week, we were trying to get out in space quickly. We used the short pass like the run.”
