The Union High School Yellowjackets may have gone 1-2 last week in the East Central Community College tournament.

But Coach Scott Thomas said his team showed signs of coming around. The Yellowjackets opened the tournament by defeating Northeast Lauderdale 47-43. The next night, they lost a 73-44 decision to West Lauderdale, and then closed out in the consolation bracket with a 67-58 loss to Forest.

"We didn't win but I thought our best game of the year was against Forest," Thomas said. "We played more as a team and things fell together. If we keep that up, we will be okay."

The Bearcats led 29-28 at the half. Thomas said turnovers and mistakes at the end of the third quarter put the Yellowjackets in a hole. Quinton Campbell led Union with 18 points while Tre Bogan added 10.

The Union girls lost two games in the East Central tournament, falling 42-34 to Northeast Lauderdale and 52-23 to Newton County. Kimmaira Jackson was the leading scorer for Union in both games, scoring 14 against Northeast Lauderdale and 23 against Newton County.

Union was to visit West Lauderdale on Tuesday and Newton County on Friday.
