Opponents might wish that the Xplosion traveling fast-pitch softball team would play within their own age group.

The team has several players who still qualify to play in 14-year-old tournaments. But in three tournaments so far, they have held their own in the 16 and 18-year-old divisions.

They started back in May in an 18-year-old tournament in Gulfport where they came in seventh out of 24 teams.

They went to Vicksburg on the weekend of June 1 and placed second in the 18-year-old bracket.

Last weekend, the Xplosion placed second again in a 20-team tournament in Starkville but they came close to winning.

With the time limit running out, the Xplosion trailed 4-0. Meg Martin doubled to knock in a run. Then Ali Pike hit a three-run homer to tie the score.

The time limit ran out and they went to the International tie-breaker. The Xplosion scored one run in the top of the inning and their opponent scored two in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

"We came close," said Coach Craig Martin. "Our goal is to keep these girls together and playing."

The Xplosion has a busy schedule for the remainder of the summer.

- June 21-22 - 18U tournament in Brookhaven;

- June 28-29 - State tournament in Meridian;

- July 12-14 - Big Orange tournament at Knoxville;

- July 25-28 Southern Regional at Gulfport (30 teams entered).

The Xplosion stands at 9-6-2 so far this summer.
