Whippets hold off Rockets rally for big 42-27 win Friday night

Kosciusko used a couple of big passing plays and turnovers to defeat Neshoba Central 42-27 Friday night in prep football action.
Neshoba Central’s Patrick Burrage rounds the right side of the line in Friday night’s game against Kosciusko. The Whippets won the game, 42-27.
The Rockets dropped to 0-2 on the season. They will host Philadelphia this Friday night with the kickoff set for 7 p.m.
"We are a work in progress," Neshoba Central Coach Chuck Friend said. "We have two more games and an open week before our division schedule starts and we have got to get better.
"We did some good things tonight. Our offensive line played better in the second half. But we gave up to many plays and that cost us."
The Rockets trailed 14-3 at the half. Kosciusko scored on a couple of long plays while Neshoba Central's Taylor Irby kicked a 38-yard field goal.
The Rockets pulled to within three points early in the third quarter when Patrick Burrage ran into the end zone from four yards out. Burrage ran in the two-point conversion and the Rockets trailed 14-11 with 6:53 remaining in the quarter.
Kosciusko retook the momentum two plays later on an 88-yard touchdown reception. The kick was good and the Whippets led 21-11 with 6:30 left in the quarter.
Kosciusko forced the Rockets to punt and set up 15-play scoring drive the ended on a four-yard run. The Whippets kicked the extra point and led 28-11.
Two plays later, the Rockets fumbled the ball away and Kosciusko scored again to make it 35-11. The Rockets punted four plays after the kickoff and the Whippets scored their final points on a 39-yard passing play.
The Rockets refused to give up as they came back with a scoring drive of their own. Burrage scored his second touchdown of the night on an 18-yard run. Burrage ran in the extra point and the Rockets trailed 42-19.
The Rockets forced the Whippets to punt and then scored again, this time with Kavante McCarty running 20 yards for a touchdown. Burrage ran in the two-point conversion.
Neshoba Central finished with 238 total yards. The Rockets had 163 yards rushing on 38 carries and completed 8-of-13 passes for 75 yards. Kosciusko had 441 total yards. The Whippets rushed for 251 yards on 20 carries and completed 7-of-12 passes for 190 yards.
Burrage rushed 21 times for 150 yards and caught two passes for five yards. Damien Seales caught three passes for 30 yards.
James Campbell led Neshoba Central with 12 tackles while Cristian Steele added 11. McCarty had nine tackles and Seales recovered a fumble.
Kosciusko improved to 2-0 on the season.
