The Union Yellowjackets have put a lot of time and effort into their summer workout program as they look to improve on last season’s 2-8 record.

Last season turned out to be a rebuilding season for the Yellowjackets after graduation took many of their top seniors. Union had made it to the third round of the Class 2A state playoffs in 2016 and Coach Brad Breland is looking for them to rebound this fall.

“We worked pretty hard this summer,” Breland said. “Some days were better than others. But I think we will be better this year.

“We played some 7-on-7 this summer and I thought we did well. We are going to run what we run but it gave us a chance to work on our passing game.”

Junior Colby Ferguson will be playing quarterback this year. Ferguson saw a lot of action last year and played some quarterback toward the end of the season. Breland said Ferguson has shown he can both run and throw the ball.

Some of his receivers include Trevor Patchin, Jamarian Harmon and Kennon Clay. Breland said the running back positions are wide open as the Yellowjackets look toward the start of fall practice on July 30.

Some of the returning linemen Breland is counting on include Dustin Welborn, Jacob Moore, Garrett Posey and Ethan Kinard. Jaheim Gill has had a good summer at corner back.

“A lot of our guys will have to play both ways,” Breland said. “Our offensive line should be one of our strong points this year.”

The Yellowjackets received a positive boost during spring when the power lifting team won the Class 2A state championship for the second year in a row. Breland said he is hoping there was be carryover from that.

“We are getting stronger with our weight lifting but that’s just part of it,” Breland said.

The Yellowjackets will see their first action August 10 when they play Northeast Lauderdale in the East Central jamboree. They open the season on the road August 17 at Choctaw Central.
