The Union Yellowjackets swept a pair of games from Madison St. Joseph over the weekend to move to the next round of the State Class 2A baseball playoffs.

The Yellowjackets won game one 3-1 and then took game two 7-6.

Union now advances to the second round against Taylorsville. The Tartars are the No. 1 team out of Region 8-3A where they went 9-1 in region play. Taylorsville comes into the game with a 22-4 record.

"They are ranked as the best team in 2A but we are looking forward to playing them," Union Coach Dustin Hamrick said. "They put us out last year and our guys were hoping to get a chance to play them again."

Union enters the series with a 12-14 record. Game one will be played Thursday at Taylorsville starting at 7 p.m. The second game will be held at Union on Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will be played at Taylorsville on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.

Union outhit Madison St. Joseph 7-2 in game one. The Yellowjackets scored one in the first, one in the third and one in the fourth. The Bruins answered with one in the seventh.

Zach Mowdy was the winning pitcher. He recorded 10 strikeouts.

Grant Gibbs led the Yellowjackets with three singles while Jake Rawson added two singles. Taylor Gibbs had a double and Will Kennedy hit a single.

Union scored three runs in the seventh inning to come from behind to take the win.

The Yellowjackets came into the inning down by one but scored a run on an error to tie the game at 5-5. Kennedy hit an one-RBI triple to put Union in front and then scored on an error to help seal the victory.

Dustin Bates was the winning pitcher while Mowdy picked up the save.

Union finished with six hits. Kennedy led with a triple, a single and three RBIs, while Austin Hood hit a double and a single. Jake Rawson and Ryan Baysinger both hit a single.
