The Union Yellowjacket baseball season came to an end last week in the third round of the State Class 2A playoffs.
The Yellowjackets were locked in a series with rival Enterprise. In earlier meetings, the winning margin was just one run and there was no difference in the playoffs.
The Bulldogs won the first game last Tuesday, 9-8. On Wednesday, games two and three, if necessary, would be played at Union due to pending rain possibilities.
Union won the second game, 3-2. Though the third game was played at Union, Enterprise was deemed the home team and the Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the seventh to win the game and advance to the South State championship game.
"That was the way it was all season," Coach Dustin Hamrick said. "The home team won all five games in the bottom of the seventh. These were two very evenly matched teams.
"Looking back, this has really been a great team to coach. They worked hard and the left everything out on the field. We are losing five seniors and most of them were seventh graders on the team when I started out as an assistant coach. We are going to miss them, but we have a good group and I believe we will be back next season."
Union finished the season with a 16-13 record.
Union battled back but a big second inning for the Bulldogs was hard to overcome.
Union scored one in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and four in the seventh. Enterprise scored six in the second and three in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Paul White was the losing pitcher while working in relief of Dustin Bates. Bates had two strikeouts.
White, Austin Hood and Ryan Baysinger all had two hits each to pace the Yellowjackets while Jake Rawson, Dustin Bates, Grant Gibbs and Walker Kelly all hit a single.
Walker Kelly and Paul White both hit RBI singles in the fourth inning to lead the Yellowjackets past Enterprise.
Union scored one in the first and two in the fourth. Enterprise answered with one in the first and one in the sixth.
Jake Rawson was the winning pitcher.
Union had an 8-6 hitting edge. White led with a triple and a single while Grant Gibbs and Dustin Bates both added a double. Walker Kelly and Adam Richardson both hit a single.
Union battled back to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Then Enterprise scored in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.
Union scored one in the second for its only run before the seventh. The Bulldogs scored one in the first and two in the fourth.
Dustin Bates took the pitching loss in relief of Austin Hood and Walker Kelly.
Will Kennedy hit a triple and a single to pace the Yellowjackets. White added a double while Grant Gibbs and Richardson hit two singles. Rawson and Kelly had one single each.
"I believe if we played Enterprise 20 times, each team would have 10 wins and they would all be by a run" Hamrick said. "These were two evenly matched teams."
Enterprise was later eliminated by Taylorsville in the South State series.
