Coach Brad Breland collected his 100th victory as a head coach Friday night as the Union Yellowjackets marched past the Clarkdale Bulldogs 47-13 in prep football action.
Breland has been the head coach at his alma mater since 2001. And there was another honor that came his way last week. It was announced he would be the head coach of the South team in the annual Bernard Blackwell High School all-star football game on December 21 in Gulfport. Breland took all of the accolades in stride.
"It was a good win for us," Breland said. "We are in good shape right now but we have some big region games the rest of the way.
Union improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Region 5-2A standings while Clarkdale dropped to 0-7 and 0-2. Union visits Scott Central this Friday night, hosts undefeated Lake on Oct. 25 and then closes out at Newton High School on Nov. 1. Here's how the region standings look:
Region 5-2A standings
Lake 7-0 2-0
Union 5-3 2-0
Scott Central 3-4 1-1
Newton 3-5 1-1
Enterprise 1-7 0-2
Clarkdale 0-8 0-2
In an interesting turn of events, Breland's Yellowjackets will play against the Lake Hornets, coached by his brother, Jeff Breland. Later, Jeff will join Brad as an assistant coach in the all-star game.
"This will be the first time we have coached together," said Brad. "He was five years ahead of me and we never played on the same team so this will be the first time we were on the same side. I'm looking forward to it."
Clarkdale scored first when the Bulldogs recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The try for two failed and Clarkdale led 6-0 with 8:50 left in the first quarter.

Union's Jake Rawson intercepted a pass and scored to put the Yellowjackets ahead. The extra point failed and Union led 12-6 at the break.
Union would score 20 unanswered points in the second quarter as the Yellowjackets took control of the game. Bogan threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Quidarian Jackson and ran for touchdown from 49 yards out. In between, Tradarian Harris ran 26 yards for a touchdown.
