Union improves to 6-4

The Union Yellowjackets went 2-1 last week as they entered the week with a 6-4 record.
Union won two games in the tournament at Q.V. Sykes Field in Meridian, knocking off Northeast Lauderdale 4-2 and St. Aloysius of Vicksburg, 8-1. On Saturday, Union dropped an 11-8 decision to Morton.
Union has three games slated for this week. They were to visit Clarkdale on Tuesday and host the Bulldogs on Friday. On Saturday, they host Forest.
Both teams had seven hits in Union's win over Northeast Lauderdale. Union scored all four of its runs in the sixth inning. The Trojans scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth. Zack Mowdy was the winning pitcher with 12 strikeouts. He improved his record to 3-0 on the season.
The Yellowjackets dominated the Flashes for their second win. Union scored three in the first, two in the second, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. St. Al scored one in the first.
Dustin Bates was the winning pitcher as he finished with seven strike outs. Mowdy led the way with two hits. Paul White hit a double while Jake Rawson, Grant Gibbs, Will Kennedy, Bates, Austin Hood and Tre Bogan all had a single.
Morton scored 10 runs in the third inning and went up 11-0. But the Yellowjackets fought back with five in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
"Our guys refused to give up," Coach Dustin Hamrick said. "Everything went wrong in the third inning but we didn't quit. We fought back and actually had the tying run at the plate before Morton closed it out."
Kennedy was the losing pitcher. Union finished with 11 hits. Gibbs had three hits; Mowdy hit two doubles; White had a double; Bogan hit a triple and a single; and, Kennedy had two hits.
