Union football coach Brad Breland has spent this summer looking for leaders on the 2013 Yellowjacket team as they go through their off season weight program.
"We have been coming in and lifting three times a week," Breland said. "And the participation has been good.
"We have had some guys who are pushing the others in the weight room, and that's good. But what we have to do is find out who is going to step up on Friday night when we are down a touchdown or two, and brings us back We have some who I think can do it but we'll have to see," Breland said.
Union is coming off a 10-3 season last year which saw the Yellowjackets win the Region 5-2A championship for the second year in a row. Union made it to the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated by Mize.
The Yellowjackets have a new schedule and three new Region 5-2A foes this year. They dropped Pisgah and Leake County and have picked up Clarkdale, Enterprise and Newton High School.
Union opens the season on Friday, August 23 at Nanih Waiya. They come home August 30 to take on Choctaw Central, and then travel to Sebastopol on September 6.
The Yellowjackets close out their non-region schedule with two-out-of-three home games as they entertain Ackerman on September 13, Leake Central on September 20, and then visit Madison St. Joseph on September 27.
Union opens its region play at Enterprise on October 4. The Yellowjackets host Clarkdale on October 10, visit Scott Central on October 18, and then host Lake October 25. The regular season comes to an end November 1 with a visit to Newton High School.
"It's a good schedule," Breland said. "Our guys have been working hard to get ready. It won't be long until we are back out there."
