The Union Yellowjackets returned from the holidays to pick up a pair of victories last weekend in prep basketball action.

The Yellowjackets defeated Morton 43-29 last Friday night and then stopped Bogue Chitto 44-34 in the Newton High School tournament. The Union girls went 1-1. They defeated Morton 50-34 and then dropped a 46-40 decision to Bogue Chitto Saturday morning.

Both Union teams were to open Region 4-2A play Tuesday night when they hosted Scott Central. That will be their only game this week.

The Yellowjackets took the early lead and then held for the victory over Morton. The Yellowjackets held the Panthers to single digits in all four quarters.

Union led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. Morton would have a 7-6 scoring edge in the second quarter but Union led 21-13 at the half. Union pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 11-6. Leading 33-19 heading into the final quarter, Union outscored Morton 12-9 to take the win.

J.T. Vance led with 16 points while JaMarcus Jones added 11 points.

 

Yellowjackets 44

Bogue Chitto 34

The Yellowjackets improved their record to 15-2 with a 10-point win over Bogue Chitto in the Newton High School tournament.

Union led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Yellowjackets outpointed the Bobcats 8-4 in the second quarter and led 21-13 at the half. Bogue Chitto answered the challenge in the third quarter as they had a 12-8 scoring edge. Union led 29-25 going into the final stanza and outscored the Bobcats 15-9 to put the win away.

P.J. Gage led with 14 points while Jones added 10.

“We came back and played good defense in both games,” Coach John Darnell said. “I was proud of the effort.”

The Union girls took the lead in the first half and then put some points on the scoreboard in the second half.

Union led 21-12 at the half. They then scored 17 points in both the third and fourth quarter as they put Morton away.

Ansley Rigby led with 16 points while Kamyia Russell added 10 points and Kaliyah Temple scored nine.

Union dropped to 12-7 with their loss to Bogue Chitto in the Newton tournament.

Union trailed 19-13 at the half. Both teams scored 27 points in the second half.

Rigby led with 16 points while Keirra Russell scored 12.
