Union boys top Choctaw during 3-0 week

The Union Yellowjackets improved to 6-2 on the season with victories over Clarkdale, Leake County and Choctaw Central last week in prep basketball action.
The Yellowjackets defeated Clarkdale 75-40 and Leake County 55-39 to collect a pair of region victories. And then they defeated the Warriors 69-57.
Union coach Scott Thomas knew the players on both sides, having coached at Choctaw Central for so many years. He is in his second season at Union.
"The win over Choctaw Central was big," Thomas said. "Our kids played well.
"I know most of the players on Choctaw Central and still love them. I know all of their coaches and we are good friends but this was a good win for our program at Union," Thomas said.
The Union girls, meanwhile, defeated Clarkdale 43-40 in overtime, Leake County 62-36, and then dropped a 68-41 decision to Choctaw Central. The Lady Yellowjackets enter the week with a 4-4 record.
"We are starting to come together," coach Tyler Spears said. "We are developing a routine and everyone is learning her role on the team. We are getting better."
Union was to host West Lauderdale on Tuesday and then play three games in the Philadelphia tournament. Along with the Tornadoes, joining the Yellowjackets in the tournament will be Leake Central and Morton.

The Yellowjackets led by 10 points at the half and held on for the victory.
Quinton Campbell led Union with 25 points while Camein Brown added 19.

Union bounced out to a big lead and never looked back.
The Yellowjackets led 32-16 at the half. Campbell scored 22 points to lead Union while J.D. Talley added 12 and Brown scored nine.

Choctaw Central 57
The first half was close with the score being tied at 34-34 at the half.
Union outscored the Warriors 18-11 in the third quarter and carried a 52-45 lead into the final quarter. Union held on for the victory.
Campbell and Brown both scored 21 points to lead the Yellowjackets while Jesse Gill added 12.

Clarkdale 40 OT
Trailing by five late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Yellowjackets came back to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Kia Rogers hit a three-point shot to put her team up in the overtime period and Union held on for the win. Rogers led the Lady Yellowjackets with 23 points.

Leake County 36
The Lady Yellowjackets improved to 2-0 in the region standings with a win over Leake County.
Union went up 37-13 at the half and never looked back. Rogers led the Lady Yellowjackets with 24 points while Natasha McCune added 13.

The Lady Warriors pulled away in the second quarter and held on for the win.
Choctaw Central led 44-24 at the half and held on for the win.
Rogers scored 17 points to lead Union while Ericka Huddleston added 10.
