The Union High School Yellowjackets are battling for the top seed in the upcoming Region 5-2A tournament as they close out their regular season schedule this week in prep basketball action.
The Yellowjackets entered the week with a 17-6 overall record and stand at 7-1 in the region standings. They are to visit Puckett on Tuesday and host Scott Central on Friday.
Union controls its own destiny. Scott Central and Lake have two losses in the region standings and the Yellowjackets can win out. However, Union's only loss came to Scott Central and a loss Friday night could throw them into a tie. Coach Scott Thomas said his team has experience in big games and will be ready for the challenge.
"We have been playing very well," Thomas said. "We are healthy and have everyone well. We have prepared and need to take care of business."
The Yellowjackets went 2-0 last week as they defeated Enterprise 78-50 and Lake 72-59. The Union girls split a pair of games last week. They defeated Enterprise57-40 and then lost a 56-37 decision to Lake.
Tre Bogan scored 20 points to lead the Yellowjackets past Enterprise. The Yellowjackets led 29-8 after the first quarter and were never seriously challenged. Carmein Brown added 16 points and Quinton Campbell scored 15.
Campbell and Bogan also played well in the Yellowjackets' win over Lake.
Kia Rogers and Ebone' Buckley both scored 15 points in the Lady Yellowjackets' win over Enterprise.
Rogers injured her ankle in this game and could be lost for the season.
Erica Huddleston scored 10 points to lead Union in their loss to Lake.
