Union baseball pitchers key to Yellowjackets region sweep

The Union pitching staff put together a pair of outstanding games to give the Yellowjackets a pair of Region 5-2A wins last week in prep baseball action.
Union swept two games from Scott Central, winning the first game 10-4 and game two 8-4. In a non-region game, the Yellowjackets dropped a 12-0 decision to West Lauderdale.
"We played well in both Scott Central games," Coach Dustin Hamrick said. "West Lauderdale's pitching was tough for us but they are tough on everyone they play. I wanted us to get a chance to see really good pitching and we saw it."
The Yellowjackets entered the week with a 9-5 overall record and 4-0 in the region standings. They were to visit Enterprise on Tuesday and host the Bulldogs on Thursday. They host Leake Central on Saturday.

Dustin Bates went seven innings and struck out 11 batters to pace the Yellowjackets. Union scored one in the first, three in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth. Scott Central answered with two in the first and two in the sixth.
The Yellowjackets had an 11-4 hitting edge. Bates helped his cause with a double and a single; Jake Rawson hit a triple; Will Kennedy and Austin Hood both hit two singles; Adam Richardson had three hits; and Grant Gibbs hit a double.

Union scored three in the first, two in the third, and three in the fifth. Scott Central answered with one in the first, on in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
William Kelly hit a single and knocked in three runs for the Yellowjackets; Bates hit a double and a single; and, Rawson, Kennedy, Gibbs and Lane Stevens all hit a single.
West Lauderdale 12
Union couldn't muster a hit against the Knights.
West Lauderdale scored two in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the seventh.
