Union Lady Yellowjackets earn playoff spot in state

The Union Lady Yellowjackets wrapped up second place in the Region 6-2A standings with two big wins last week in prep fast-pitch softball action.
The Lady Yellowjackets open play in the state playoffs Friday at the No. 3 team out of Region 8-2A. Games two and three, if necessary, will be played at Union on Saturday.
"We aren't sure but it will be either Richton or Seminary," Coach Jacob Casey said. "We are really pleased to have taken second place in the region. It was a great accomplishment for the girls."
The Lady Yellowjackets took a 13-3 win over Lake and then stopped Clarkdale 5-3 for a pair of region wins. They then lost 11-1 to Southeast Lauderdale and 6-3 to Philadelphia. Union enters the week at 9-11 overall and 3-2 in the region. They were to play Enterprise on Tuesday and close out the regular season at Louisville on Thursday.
The Union girls claimed second place in the Region 6-2A standings. They will play a series with the third place team out of Region 8-2A, traveling there for a single game on Friday and hosting games two and three, if necessary, on Saturday.
Brett Whitlock was the pitcher of record for all four of Union's games. She record 13 strikeouts last week.
Union outhit Lake 13-4. The Lady Yellowjackets scored two in the second, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and nine in the seventh. Lake responded with one in the fifth and two in the seventh.
Ebony Buckley led the Lady Yellowjackets with a home run. Sam Keneker and Averi Pender both whit a double and a single while Kristen Kennedy added three singles.
The Lady Yellowjackets scored late to put away Clarkdale. Union scored one in the first, one in the third and three in the sixth. Clarkdale scored two in the first and one in the fifth.
Keneker led with a triple and a single while Kennedy added a double and a single.
The Lady Yellowjackets could only muster four hits in their loss to Southeast Lauderdale. Whitlock hit a double.
Union and Philadelphia played a close game on Saturday. The Lady Tornadoes scored two in the first, two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the seventh. Union scored two in the third and one in the seventh. Whitlock led Union with a double and a single while Pender added a double.
