The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets responded to the challenge last Thursday as they took a 5-4 victory over Newton County in extra innings in slow-pitch softball action.

Newton County went up 3-0 in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Tenly Grisham belted a three-run homer and that tied the game.

That’s how it stood until the top of the eighth when the Lady Cougars scored a run to take the lead. But in the bottom of the inning, Neshoba Central scored one run to tie the game. Then Reese Page knocked in the winning run with a fielder’s choice.

Elleigh Willis was the winning pitcher. Jayda Ben and Layana Morris both had two hits while Hamaya Fielder, Shante Beaulieu and Mya Willis all had one.

“When we got down, we knew we had to keep playing,” Coach Trae Embry said. “Both teams played good defense and pitched well. But we got runners on base and found a way to win.”

This counted as a division victory for the Lady Rockets who have division games with West Lauderdale on Tuesday and at Northeast Lauderdale on Thursday. On Saturday, they will play in the Houston tournament against Amory and Houston.

The Lady Rockets entered this week with an 11-0 record. Last Tuesday, they defeated Lawrence County 4-3.

Neshoba Central scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth. Lawrence County answered with two in the first and one in the fourth.

Nautica Bacon hit two doubles to lead the Lady Rockets. Grisham hit a double and a single while Page hit a double. Elleigh Willis, Shante Beaulieu and Fielder all hit a single
