The Philadelphia Tornadoes brought home gold this past weekend as they won the Sebastopol basketball tournament Friday night in prep basketball action.

The Tornadoes drew a first round bye in the tournament. They defeated Union 46-40 Friday night to advance to the finals. On Saturday night, Philadelphia defeated host Sebastopol 59-37 to win the tournament.

Earlier in the week, Philadelphia defeated Montgomery County 58-36. Philadelphia entered the week with a 6-1 record.

“We have got to get better,” Coach Michael Tardy said. “It was a good week. Right now, we are trying to come together as a team.

“We are working our football players in and trying to determine what their roles will be. They are responding. Everyone is playing hard on defense. The offense will come together.”

The Philadelphia girls won two-out-of-three games. They opened the week with a 66-16 win over Montgomery County. They lost a 52-47 decision to Union in the Sebastopol tournament semifinals. Philadelphia came back to beat Clarkdale 48-32 in the consolation game.

The Tornadoes warmed up for the Sebastopol tournament with a win over Montgomery County.

This was the first game the players from the football team saw action. The Tornadoes led 33-20 at the half. They outscored Montgomery County 17-4 in the third quarter to settle the issue.

Jarron Boler led with 17 points. Kelton Abston added 12 points and Stetson Moore scored nine.

Union 40

Union and Philadelphia will meet twice more, at least, this season as both are in Region 4-2A. It was a close battle with the second quarter proving to be the difference.

The score was tied at 9-9 after the first quarter. Philadelphia had an 11-5 scoring edge in the second quarter and led 20-14 at the break. Both teams scored 26 points in the second half.

Boler led with 15 points while Moore added 13. Zabin Hunter scored nine points.

Philadelphia jumped out to a 27-11 halftime lead. It was closer in the second half. Philadelphia would outscore the Bobcats 18-15 in the third quarter to lead 45-26 heading into the fourth quarter. The Tornadoes held off the Bobcats to claim the victory.

Jarron Boler led with 19 points while Tanner Boler added 14 and Stetson Moore scored 13.

Montgomery County 16

Philadelphia settled this one early as they led 26-2 after the first quarter.

Nia Luckett led with 18 points while Andrika Carter added 17.

Union came on strong in the second half to defeat Philadelphia.

The Lady Tornadoes led 33-26 at the half. Union would limit Philadelphia to 14 points in the second half while scoring 26 as they took the victory.

Tyesha Cole led with 14 points while Luckett scored 11.

Clarkdale 32

Philadelphia bounced back the next day with a win over Clarkdale in the consolation round.

Philadelphia led 19-7 after the first round. Both teams scored 12 points in the second half and Philadelphia led 27-19 at the half. The Lady Tornadoes put the game away in the third quarter as they outscored Clarkdale 14-2.

Carter scored 12 points and Luckett finished with nine.
