Thompson sees progress in Warriors' workouts

Coach Jerrod Thompson says participation in the summer weight program has been good so far for the Choctaw Central Warrior football program.
"We have been coming in three days a week and we are averaging around 25-to-30 players for each workout," Thompson said. "We are coming off a good spring and our spirits are high. We have a tough schedule and we play in a very tough region. But we are working hard so we can be competitive."
Thompson, an alumnus of Choctaw Central, has been an assistant football coach since 2007.
In May, Choctaw Central athletic director Walter Wilson announced he had been promoted to the head coaching position.
"We have five starters returning on offense and six returning on defense," Thompson said. "Last year, we had a lot of young players seeing action and they will be ready to step up into starting roles this year."
Heading into the August drills, Bryce Billy will be starting at quarterback.
As the offense comes together, Thompson is counting on some of experience players to take leadership roles on defense.
That includes Brandon Kennedy at inside linebacker, Dakota Kennedy at outside linebacker, Cade Lilly at defensive end, and Anthony Dixon at defensive tackle.
During a spring jamboree in May, the Warriors defeated Noxapater 12-6 and lost to Sebastopol 12-6 in jamboree games played at Sebastopol.
"We had a good spring," Thompson said. "We are going to take our progress there and build on it."
Thompson said the Warriors will be attending a camp at West Alabama later this summer.
Choctaw Central will open the regular season August 22 at home against Leake Central.
