Union football coach Brad Breland said Friday night’s season-ending loss to Taylorsville was indicative of the entire season.

Union fell behind early and Taylorsville scored 26 points in the third quarter to take a 50-12 win over the Yellowjackets on Friday night.

Union ends the season with a 6-5 record. They started with a 4-0 record but lost the last four games.

Breland said it was disappointing to end the season the way it did.

“It was kind of like the whole year has been,” Breland said. “We play hard, play hard and somebody take a play off or we have a break down. Then boom, the other team goes and scores. We played really hard and it wasn’t anywhere near a 50-12 game. It should have been 18-6 at the half but they break a long run because we don’t squeeze and it’s 24-6. We fumbled the kickoff to start the second half and they score on the first play. It went from being 18-6 to 36-6 in a matter of two minutes and it just kind of got away from us at that point.”

Taylorsville got a fast start as they scored on a 42-yard pass from Ty Keyes to Jabez Griffith with 9:36 left in the first. The PAT failed and Taylorsville led 6-0.

Disasters struck for Union on the next possession as Colby Ferguson’s punt was blocked and recovered by Jeffery Pittman for a touchdown to give the Tartars a 12-0 lead with 7:57 left in the first.

The score remained 12-0 until midway through the second when Pittman scored on a two-yard run with 5:39 left in first half and the Tartars led 18-0.

Union got back in the game when Kenyon Clay got loose and scored on a 33-yard run with 3:45 left in the half. The try for two failed and Taylorsville led 18-6.

With time running out in the first half, Taylorsville popped a big run and then scored on a two-yard run by Pittman with 18 seconds left in the half to lead 24-6 at the half.

The Tartars put the game out of reach in the third quarter when they added two quick scores. The first was a 34-yard run by Pittman and the second was a seven-yard pass from Keyes to Griffith as the Tartars led 36-6 with 10:09 left in the third.

Union responded with a quick score as Ferguson scored on a one-yard run with 10:09 left in the third to cut the lead to 36-6.

The Tartars then added two more scores. Keyes hit Tyrese Keyes on a 30-yard pass and then hit Travis Keyes on a 33-yard pass for the final margin.

Taylorsville had another big night on offense as they had 458 yards with 309 yards rushing and 149 passing. Ty Keyes was 10-of-17 passing for 149 yards and rushed for 55 yards on two carries. Pittman had 155 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Union struggled on offense with 187 yards of total offense. The Yellowjackets rushed for 163 yards. Clay had 145 yards rushing on 17 carries. Colby Ferguson was 3-of-10 passing for 24 yards.

Clay led the defense with 8.5 tackles while Peyton Posey had seven tackles. Carlos Hickman had five tackles while Jamaron Harmon, Markus Jones and Cameron Jackson each had to tackles apiece.
