The slow-pitch softball season got under way with all four local teams seeing action during the Neshoba Central Jamboree Saturday.

It made for a long day under a hot sun. Each team was allowed to play two four-inning games to give their players a taste of action. The games do not count on their record. All four local teams will be involved in Classic games this Saturday, and then the real season gets under way.

Here's a recap for each team.

Choctaw Central

The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors split two games in the jamboree.

The Lady Warriors dropped a 1-0 decision to East Webster and then defeated Union 3-1.

The Lady Warriors will play in the Kosciusko Classic this Saturday. They will play Winona at 1 p.m. and Leake Central at 4 p.m. The real action starts the following Tuesday when they host Louisville, and then host Meridian High School on Thursday.

Lashayla McMillan hit a double against East Webster. Sophomore Tiara Joe was the Lady Warriors' pitcher in both games.

Choctaw Central scored one run in the first inning and two in the third against Union. Joe hit a triple and a single. Lachrisha Williams added a single.

Neshoba Central

The defending Class 5A state champion Lady Rockets took a 3-0 win over West Lauderdale and an 11-0 win over Leake Central.

Mallory Tucker was the winning pitcher in the first game and Meshay Jimmie was on the mound in the second contest.

"We hit too many fly balls and we need to work on that," Coach Trae Embry said. "We played good defense and I liked that. We have a lot of work to do."

The Lady Rockets have two games scheduled for Saturday's Newton County Classic when they play Petal at 6:25 p.m. and Clarkdale at 7:50 p.m.

The Lady Tornadoes got their first taste of action Saturday and walked away with a win and a tie.

The Lady Tornadoes battled West Lauderdale to a 4-4 tie. Marsha Hunt led Philadelphia with a double.

Philadelphia then took an 8-2 win over Northeast Lauderdale. Alyssa Davis hit a two-run homer to lead the Lady Tornadoes. Autumn Davis added a triple while Kenyatta Moore, Isabella Fulton and T'Kambry Jordan all added singles. Kambresha Griffin pitched in both games.

The Lady Tornadoes play in the Newton County Classic on Saturday. They face West Lauderdale again at 2:10 p.m. and Clarkdale at 5 p.m. Philadelphia then opens the season at Sebastopol on Tuesday and hosts Neshoba Central on Thursday.

The Lady Yellowjackets battled Newton County to a 3-3 tie in their second game of the day. Earlier, they dropped a 3-1 decision to Choctaw Central.

"We are going to be better this year," Coach Jacob Casey said. "We have worked hard this summer to get stronger and it's going to pay off. We played good defense against Newton County and hit the ball well. We showed what we could do."

The Lady Yellowjackets have two games set for Saturday morning in the Newton County Classic. They take on Meridian High at 8:30 a.m., and then play Northwest at 11 a.m.

Union scored its only run against Choctaw Central in the first inning. Haley Morgan was the pitcher.

Union scored two runs in the first and one in the second against the Lady Cougars. Haley Morgan was the pitcher.
