Philadelphia takes landmark win

The Lady Tornadoes of Philadelphia High School picked up five victories last week in fast-pitch action.
That included a 4-2 win over power house Newton County. The Lady Tornadoes entered the week with a 16-4 record.
"Beating Newton County was a very big win for our program," Coach Austin McNair said. "We hit the ball well and played good defense. When we do that, we can be successful."
The Lady Tornadoes went up 2-0 in the first inning. Alyssa Davis hit a double and went to third. She scored on Latesha Carter's sacrifice bunt. Later, K.K. Bounds knocked in Jada White.
Philadelphia added two runs in the second inning. Precious Moore hit a double and scored in Davis' single. Carter then knocked in Davis.
Newton County would score one in the third and one in the fifth but the Lady Tornadoes held on for the win. Caitlin Dickerson was the winning pitcher. Davis finished with two hits while White had a triple. Moore had a double and Bounds and Dana Anderson all had singles.
The Lady Tornadoes moved on to take two Region 5-3A wins over Newton High School by the same scored - 16-0. On Saturday, they hit the road to beat Kosciusko 7-4 and Nanih Waiya 6-3.
The Lady Tornadoes have another busy week ahead. They were to visit Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday; host Choctaw Central on Thursday and then host Northwest Rankin on Friday. Saturday, Philadelphia visits Union.
In their first game with Newton, the Lady Tornadoes scored six in the first, three in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth. Dickerson had seven strike outs while picking up the win. Davis led her team with three hits while Carter added a triple. White, Anderson and Precious Sanders all hit doubles.
It was about the same in the second Newton game as Philadelphia scored 14 in the first and two in the second inning. Macy Goldman was the winning pitcher with seven strike outs. Autumn Davis hit a triple and a single; Marshay Hunt hit a triple; and, Isabella Fulton belted a single.
Philadelphia started its long Saturday road trip with a 7-4 win over Kosciusko. The Lady Tornadoes scored one in the first, one in the sixth and five in the seventh. The Lady Whippets scored four in the sixth. Dickerson had 10 strike outs in the win.
White hit a two-run homer to pace Philadelphia. Anderson added two doubles while Bounds hit a double and two singles. Davis hit a triple and a double while Kambresha Griffin hit a double and a single.
The Lady Tornadoes then traveled to Nanih Waiya where they took a 6-3 win over the Lady Warriors. The Lady Tornadoes scored one in the first, one in the fourth and four in the sixth. Nanih Waiya scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh. Dickerson recorded 10 strike outs in the game, giving her 24 for the day.
Philadelphia banged out 10 hits. Anderson led with three hits while Davis, Dickerson and Moore all had two.
