SCOOBA - Neshoba Central concluded its football spring training with a 25-0 loss to Noxubee County last Thursday at the East Mississippi Community College jamboree.

"We've got a long way to go," Coach Chuck Friend said. "Going in, I felt pretty good about the offensive line. But Noxubee County was so quick and we didn't handle them well. We have a lot to work on."

The Rockets finished with 35 yards on 36 carries.

Actually, Neshoba Central started well when they recovered a fumble on the Noxubee County 20-yard line. But on first down, the Tigers pushed them back for an 18-yard loss and the Rockets couldn't get anything going.

"Really, that set the tone of the game," Friend said.

One highlight came later in the first quarter when punter Matthew Turcotte boomed one from his two-yard line that was spotted on the Noxubee County nine-yard line.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers put all of their points on the scoreboard in the second quarter. The Tigers scored on two short runs, an 18-yard touchdown pass, and fumble return.

The Rockets came in looking for a quarterback with last year's starter, Joseph Willis, transferring. Damien Steele handled the quarterbacking duties in the first half and Taylor Irby was behind the center in the second half.

Coach Friend said the summer weight program will begin in early June.

"We really need to work hard this summer," Coach Friend said.

Neshoba Central opens the 2013 football campaign on Aug. 23 at Newton County.
