The Neshoba Central Rockets stood at 3-0 after Saturday night's prep basketball game.

And while Coach Jerry Byrd acknowledged that his team still has a long season ahead of it, being undefeated for one night felt good.

"This is my fourth season and this is the first time we have been undefeated," Byrd said. "Our kids are young but they have worked hard. They are a good group of kids."

Neshoba Central will host the Clash of the Titans all day classic on Saturday. The schedule is as follows:

11 a.m. - West Lauderdale girls vs. Newton High;

12:45 - West Lauderdale boys vs. Newton High

2:30 p.m. Choctaw Central girls vs. Humphreys County;

4:15 p.m. - Choctaw Central boys vs. Humphreys County;

6 p.m. - Neshoba Central girls vs. Kemper County;

7:45 p.m. - Neshoba Central boys vs. Kemper County.

Union-Neshoba Central boys

The Rockets started the week with a 58-47 win over Northeast Lauderdale in a classic game that was played at West Lauderdale. Neshoba Central led 30-17 at the half and held on for the win. Gary Willis led the team with 14 points while TJ Ben added 11.

The Rockets then took a 64-34 win over Union. The Yellowjackets were just getting their team together as their football season had ended the night before. Neshoba Central went up 21-7 at the end of the first quarter and outscored Union 19-18 in the second half to post a 40-25 halftime lead.

The Rockets would outscore Union 18-8 in the third quarter and put the game away. Chayton York led the Rockets with 14 points while Mingo added 13 and Ben scored 10. Quinton Campbell led Union with 12 points.

On Tuesday, the Union boys dropped a 53-30 decision to Leake County. All but three of the Union players were still involved in football and Coach Scott Thomas dressed five members of the baseball team to get the game in. Quinton Campbell scored 24 points to lead Union.

"It's going to take our guys a little while switch over from football to basketball," Thomas said. "But that's part of it in a small school where you have to share athletes."

Union will be back in action Thursday when it hosts Choctaw Central.

Union-Neshoba Central girls

The Neshoba Central girls got into the win column as they defeated Union 41-34.

The Lady Yellowjackets led 15-9 after the first quarter. But Union would only score one point in the second quarter while Neshoba Central put in seven and the score was tied at 16-16 at the half.

Neshoba Central went up by one point - 25-24 - going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Rockets then put in 16 points while holding Union to nine.

Danisha Marshall scored 12 points to lead Neshoba Central, while Kimmaira Jackson paced Union with 15.

Earlier in the week, Neshoba Central dropped a decision to Northeast Lauderdale.

It was the first loss of the season for Union which dropped to 2-1. Earlier in the week, Union had taken a 51-31 win over Leake County. Ericka Huddleston led Union with 13 points and Jackson added 11.
