Nanih Waiya rallies to top Union at home

Nanih Waiya rallied with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take a 34-22 win over the Union Yellowjackets in prep football action Friday night.
The Yellowjackets carried a 22-14 lead into the fourth quarter.
"It was a tough loss but we'll learn from it," Union Coach Brad Breland said. "We will learn from the loss and we hope they will pay off when we get into our region games."
Union led 16-7 after the first quarter. Josef Butler put Union on the scoreboard first on a three-yard run. Tradarius Harris ran in the two point conversion and Union led 8-0 with 7:33 left in the first quarter.
Nanih Waiya's Ben Cumberland connected with Isaiah Eiland on a seven-yard TD pass play. Gentry Hodges kicked the extra point to make the score 8-7 in favor of Union with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Union answered quickly as Harris passed to Quinton Campbell on a 41-yard TD pass play. Butler ran in the two point conversion to punt Union in front 16-7 with 2:01 left in the first quarter. The second quarter was scoreless and that's how it stood at the half.
Jamairo Smith returned the second half kickoff 67 yards for a touchdown to put the Warriors back on the scoreboard. Hodges kicked the extra point, leaving Union ahead 16-14 with 11:47 left in the third quarter.
Union scored what would be its final points of the game when Wells went in on a one-yard run. The try for two was no good and Union led 22-14 with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Warriors. First, Smith scored on an one-yard run. The try for two failed and Union led 22-20 with 10:50 left in the game.
Then Smith scored again, this time on a 37-yard run with 7:30 left. Cumberland passed to Peyton Jones for the two point conversion and Nanih Waiya led 28-22 with 7:30 remaining.
Nanih Waiya's Wilkins Thames returned an interception for a touchdown in the final seconds and the game ended.
The Yellowjackets had a 303-282 yard edge in total offense. Union rushed the ball 38 times for 158 yards, and completed 8-of-25 passing attempts for 145 yards.
Nanih Waiya had 206 rushing yards on 43 carries, and completed 3-of-7 passes for 76 yards.
Union had a 16-14 edge in first downs. The Yellowjackets lost two fumbles and one interception while the Warriors lost four fumbles.
Butler rushed for 102 yards on seven carries while Wells had 49 yards on five carries. Harris completed 5-of-11 passing attempts for 128 yards and one touchdown. Wells was the leading receiver with four catches for 90 yards.
Smith rushed for 163 yards on 23 carries to pace the Warriors. Cumberland completed 3-of-7 passes for 76 yards.
Both teams will be back in action Friday. Union will travel to Choctaw Central while Nanih Waiya will host Clarkdale.
