The Leake Academy Rebelettes brought home their first championship trophy of the 2013 fast-pitch softball season as they won the Starkville Academy Invitational.

The Rebelettes come into the season as three-time defending State AA champions. Coach Doug Jones says the team is younger this year but has plenty of talent to bring to the plate.

"We are going to take it one game at a time," Jones said. "This is going to be a much younger team and they are going to have to work hard to improve."

Chloe Thaggard will handle the pitching duties while Katie Webb is at the plate. Robekah Roberson will be at first base while Annika Jones plays second base; Bayly Moss is the shortstop; and, Mary Grace Key plays third base. Mariallen Moore starts at left field with Grace Dabbs at center field and Brandi Quick plays right field.

"Chloe Thaggard is going to be our ace pitcher this year and she has never lost a high school game," Jones said.

The Rebelettes will be playing in District 2-AA along with Winston Academy, Manchester, Tri-County, Oak Hill and Canton Academy.

Record at start of the week: 3-0

Last week's scores: Won Starkville Tournament by defeating Central 3-0; Winston 4-0 and Winston 7-5.

This week's games: Host Tri-County on Tuesday and visit Winston on Thursday.

Player of the week: Chloe Thaggard - picked up three pitching victories; hit two home runs, three doubles and a single in Starkville tournament. One of those home runs was the game winner in championship game.

The Rebelettes got an early test in the Starkville Academy tournament as they found themselves trailing 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rebelettes had scored two runs in the first inning while Winston came back with three in the fifth and two in the top of the seventh.

Leake Academy plated a couple of runs and then Thaggard belted a walk-off three-run homer to ice the 7-5 victory. Thaggard, who had earlier hit a double, was the winning pitcher.

Webb had four hits in the game including a home run and a double. Dabbs and Jones both hit a double.

The Rebelettes opened the tournament with an 11-0 win over Central Academy, and then defeated Winston 4-0.

Leake Academy outhit Central Academy 12-1 in their first game of the season. Thaggard had four strike outs to claim the win.

The Rebelettes scored five in the first, two in the second, three in the third and one in the fifth. Dabbs led the way with a triple and a single while Key and Thaggard both added a double and a single. Moss hit a double with Roberson and Moore both adding two hits.

Thaggard had nine strike outs in the Rebelettes first game with Winston which they won 4-0.

Leake Academy had a 7-3 hitting edge. Thaggard led with a home run and a double. Webb added a double and Dabbs had two hits.
