The Leake Academy Rebels have a chance to wrap up their 2013 baseball season with a winning record - if they can win their last three games.
The Rebels entered the week with a 9-11-1 record. Weather premitting, they were to play Newton Academy on Monday and Immanuel on Tuesday and Thursday. It is possible the Rebels could play a makeup game with Canton Academy.
"We are out of the playoffs," Coach Josh Ray said. "But we are playing pretty good baseball right now. If we can win our last three games, we can have a winning record."
Last week, Leake Academy went 2-1. They defeated Simpson Academy 8-6 and Lamar School 13-9, but lost a district contest to Canton Academy 6-5. A second game with Canton Academy was postponed because of wet grounds. The Rebels stand at 2-5 in the district standings.
Will Myers went three-for-four at the plate against Simpson as he slugged a home run and two singles. Reed Mayfield added a home run while Alex Shepard went three-for-four.
The Rebels scored two in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the seventh. Simpson answered with one in the second, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Graham Scott was the winning pitcher with five strike outs.
Canton Academy scored three runs in the seventh to slip past Leake Academy 6-5. Mayfield was the losing pitcher. Shepard went four-for-four at the plate; Mayfield hit a home run and two doubles; Will Myers hit two singles; and Hunter Brown hit a double and a single.
The Rebels bounced back on Saturday to defeat Lamar School. The Rebels scored seven in the first, four in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth. Lamar answered with one in the first, four in the second, two in the third and two in the seventh.
Myers hit a home run and a double; Brown hit a home run; Drew McMillan hit two doubles and a single; Chipper Jones had three singles; and Mayfield had a double and two singles.
