The Leake Academy Rebels improved to 3-1 on the season last Friday night as they took 44-7 victory over East Rankin Academy in prep football action.

The Rebels will celebrate homecoming Friday night when they host Newton Academy. The Generals dropped a 25-6 decision to Carroll Academy last week and enter the game with a 0-3 record.

“The kids were well prepared; they went out and executed well on both sides of the ball,” Coach Brian Pickens said. “We established the run and then did well with our pass games. It was a good effort.

The Leake Academy defense held East Rankin to 12 yards in total offense. The Patriots had 26 yards rushing and negative 14 yards in passing. The Rebels finished with 224 total yards. They had 122 yards rushing and 102 yards passing.

Leake Academy jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback Will-Lawson Harkins got things started when he completed a 40-yard TD pass to Thomas Cheatham. Cameron Brown kicked the extra point and the Rebels led 7-0.

Running back Sam Wilder scored two touchdowns on runs of one and 30 yards. Brown kicked both extra points and a 26-yard field goal to close out the scoring in the first quarter.

Rusty Atkinson scored a touchdown on a 31-yard pass from Harkins, and Wilder added another touchdown on a five-yard run. Brown kicked both extra points and the Rebels led 38-0 at the half.

East Rankin got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Dawson Banes ran in from five-yards out. The kick was good and the Rebels led 38-7.

The final score came in the fourth quarter when Ryan Atkinson scored on a three-yard run. The kick failed.

Wilder was the leading rusher with 78 yards. Rusty Atkinson had two catches for 56 yards. Wyatt Estep led the defense with six tackles.
