The Leake Academy Rebels will wrap up the 2017 baseball season this week with one game against Starkville,

The Rebels did not make the playoffs this season but first year Coach Cory Burns was proud of the effort from his team.

“The kids played hard and had a good year,” Burns said. “A lot of young kids got a lot of good experience and we hope to build on that next season.

“We won't make the playoffs. We finished third in district and will wrap the season up Tuesday at Starkville. We are 12-9 right now,” Burns said.

The Rebels went 2-1 last week. They defeated Winston 10-2 and lost 4-2 to Heritage. They finished the week with a 7-6 victory over Simpson.

Zack Nowell struck out 11 batters as he took the pitching victory over Winston,

Leake Academy scored three in the first, four in the second and three in the fourth. Winston scored two in the first inning.

The Rebels came up with 13 hits. Will Lawson Harkins hit a double and a single. Drew Roberson and Jorge Rodriquez both hit a double while Houston Strength and Shawn Myers both hit two singles. Parker Leitaker, Garrett Myers, Sam Wilder and Austin Wilcher all hit a single.

Heritage came up with a big fifth inning to slip past Leake Academy.

Leake Academy scored one in the fourth and one in the sixth. Heritage answered with one in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Cameron Brown took the pitching loss. He had five strike outs.

The Rebels finished with six hits. Strength, Rodriquez, Parker Leitaker, Garrett Myers, Drew Roberson and Austin Wilcher all finished with one hit.

Leake Academy rallied in the late innings to defeat Simpson Academy.

Leake Academy scored two in the second, four in the sixth and one in the seventh. Simpson Academy scored four in the second and two in the fourth.

Shawn Myers was the winning pitcher. He struck out four batters.

The Rebels finished with 11 hits. Leitaker and Wilder both had three hits. Strength hit a double while Roberson had two hits. Rodriquez and Harkins both hit a double.
