Lady Yellowjackets turning the corner at 2-2

The Union Lady Yellowjackets went 2-2 last week during the Spring Fling fast-pitch softball tournament held at Northeast Park in Meridian.
Union started with a 2-1 win over Clinton. The Lady Yellowjackets then dropped a 2-1 decision to Lake Cormorant, one of the top teams in the state. Union dropped a 7-5 decision to West Lauderdale and then defeated Eupora 10-4.
"We are starting to come around," Union Coach Jacob Casey said. "We played well during the tournament. West Lauderdale had a couple of big innings on us but if we had avoided that, we played well enough to win. I think we are ready to compete in our region."
The Lady Yellowjackets are slated to play four games this week. They were to host Kosciusko on Monday. Then on Friday, they host Louisville. Union is to play two games in Philadelphia on Saturday, taking on the Lady Tornadoes and Germantown.
Brett Whitlock was the Union pitcher in all four of the tournament games.
Union outhit Clinton 5-1 for the win. Kristen Kennedy scored the winning run. Samantha Keneker went two-for-two.
Averi Pender got Union's only hit against Lake Cormorant.
Ebony Buckley had two hits and Whitlock was credited with two RBIs in Union's loss to West Lauderdale.
In the win over Eupora, Union scored three in the second, one in the fourth and six in the fifth. Kennedy had two hits while Whitlock hit a double and brought in four runs. Lilly Burton hit a single and had two RBIs.
