The Union Lady Yellowjackets swept through the first round of the state Class 2A fast-pitch softball playoffs as they won two games from Mize over the weekend.

Union advances to the second round against Wesson. The Lady Yellowjackets will host the first game on Friday while games two and three, if necessary, will be held at Wesson on Saturday.

"We are really starting to play at our best right now," coach Jacob Casey said. "We have been hitting the ball well. Now we have to keep it up."

The Lady Yellowjackets closes out the regular season last week before playing Mize. They lost an 11-2 decision to Enterprise but then bounced back to defeat Louisville 18-6.

Union entered the week with a 12-12 record.

In the first game with Mize, the Lady Yellowjackets scored three in the first, eight in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. Mize scored two runs in the fourth inning.

Brett Whitlock was the winning pitcher. She finished with three strikeouts.

Kristen Kennedy and Whitlock both hit three singles. Sam Keneker added a triple and a single while Ebony Buckley and Haley Morgan both added a double and a single.

Game two was pretty much the same as the Lady Yellowjackets scored three in the first, eight in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth. Mize scored three runs in the fourth.

Whitlock was the winning pitcher.

Averi Pender led the Lady Yellowjackets' 16-hit parade with a home run, a triple and a single. Buckley and Kennedy both hit a double and a single while Keri Ann Mayfield had three hits.

The Lady Yellowjackets only had five hits in their loss to Enterprise. Pender led the way with a triple and a single.

Union warmed up for the playoffs in their 18-6 win over Louisville, scoring three in the second, nine in the third and six in the fourth. Louisville answered with one in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Averi Pender was the winning pitcher.

Union banged out 18 hits. Pender hit a double and three singles to lead the Lady Yellowjackets while Buckley and Whitlock both hit a triple and a single.
