East Central Community College's fast-pitch softball team earned a pair of division contests by sweeping a doubleheader from Copiah-Lincoln Community College Saturday.

The Lady Diamond Warriors posted a 4-2 victory in the opener and held for a 2-1 decision in the second contest to improve to 23-9 overall and 7-5 in the MACJC South Division. Co-Lin dropped to 19-13-1 and 4-10.

Dakota Vowell led the offense in the opener, as the Neshoba Central High School product slapped a single in the fourth inning and doubled in the sixth.

Morgan Porter of Enterprise was the top run producer with a two-run triple.

Other hitters were LaJoya Griffin of Philadelphia and Lindsey Beard of Clarkdale, single and RBI each; Marlee Massey of Neshoba Central, triple; Amber McBroom of Brandon, double; and A.J. Peeler and Ty Buckley, both of Neshoba Central, singles each.

In the second contest, Buckley's two-run homer in the sixth inning provided EC with the winning margin.

Other hitters were Massey, double; and Peeler, McBroom, Porter and Beard, singles each. Beard also scored.

The Lady Diamond Warriors host Pearl River Community College Thursday, April 11. Game times for both doubleheaders are scheduled at 2 and 4 p.m.

Golf

Scholarships for East Central Community College students will again be the top prize winner when the annual Warrior Golf Classic is held this summer at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Choctaw.

This year's four-person scramble is scheduled for Thursday, June 27 on the Azaleas Golf Course. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a shot gun start at 10 a.m.

"The Warrior Golf Classic provides much-needed and appreciated scholarships for East Central students," said tournament coordinator Dr. Stacey Hollingsworth who serves as executive director for foundation and alumni relations.

Entry fee is $125 per person, which includes green fee, golf cart and lunch, which will be served buffet-style beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m., prior to the awards ceremony.

Corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: Gold, $650 (includes fees for a four-person team and a hole sponsorship); Silver, $400 (includes fees for two players and a hole sponsorship); and Bronze, $200 (includes a hole sponsorship).

Baseball

After claiming a 6-2 win in the opener with Pearl River Community College, East Central Community College's baseball team was unable to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats and fell 12-11 in the MACJC South Division matchup held Saturday, April 6 on the Poplarville campus.

However, the Diamond Warriors remain tied for the division lead with Jones County Junior College as both squads sported 10-4 records going into their battle Tuesday.

In the first contest with Pearl River, Ryan Shotts of Louisville and Newton County High School product Xavier Franklin collected two hits and two RBIs each to lead the EC offense. Shots belted a double and single and Franklin contributed two singles. Each also scored a run.

Other hitters were Terrance Steele of Neshoba Central and John Morgan Berry of Madison Central, singles each.

In the second contest, EC overcame an early 7-0 deficit and grabbed a 10-7 advantage in the top of the sixth only to have the Wildcats respond with five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Diamond Warriors could muster just one run in the top of the seventh and Pearl River (26-10, 9-5) held on for the victory.

Starter Blake Dubuisson was one of six hurlers on the mound for EC in the nightcap. The right-hander went 1 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits. He also walked a batter. Dubuisson is a product of Long Beach High School.

Basketball

Tryouts for the 2013-14 East Central Community College men's basketball team will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2013, on the Decatur campus.
