The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes will tangle with Pass Christian in the second round of the State Class 3A fast-pitch softball playoffs this weekend.
The Lady Tornadoes drew a first-round bye but played two games over the weekend, beating Nanih Waiya 5-4 and losing to Newton County 6-2. The Lady Tornadoes open the playoffs with a 22-5 record.
Pass Christian, meanwhile, comes in at 16-10. They swept their first round playoffs series against Forest, winning 14-2 and 11-1. Times had not been set for this weekend's series.
"We've got to be ready for the winner (of the series)," Philadelphia Coach Austin McNair said. "We got permission to play this weekend so we wouldn't get out of our routine. We have set our goals high for the playoffs."
Against Nanih Waiya, Philadelphia scored one in the first, two in the third and two in the fifth. The Lady Warriors scored two in the first, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Caitlyn Dickerson was the winning pitcher with five strike outs.
Jada White went 3-for-2 and hit a triple to lead Philadelphia. Alyssa Davis added a triple and Dana Anderson connected on a double.
The Lady Tornadoes then dropped a decision to Newton County. Davis led Philadelphia with a triple, a double and a single.
Earlier last week, Philadelphia closed out the regular season with a 6-4 win over Choctaw Central. That ensured the Lady Tornadoes would complete their district schedule undefeated at 6-0.
Davis led the way with a triple and a double while Lateshia Carter went 3-for-3. Kambreshia Griffin and Precious Moore both added a triple and K.K. Bounds hit a double.
